The Institute of Precision Mechanics (IMP):
- Conducts research in the following areas: corrosion protection, innovative technologies and new materials, safe operation of machinery, renewable energy, environmental protection, material recycling and recovery using environmentally friendly technologies and state defence and security.
- Researches and implements new and innovative technologies for surface protection using various types of protective and functional metallic and non-metallic coatings, including ceramic and composite coatings, and prepares dedicated technologies for temporary corrosion protection.
- It conducts theoretical and practical training for personnel of industrial plants regarding the implementation and improvement of surface engineering technologies.
At present, the Institute is involved in special material research in the area of interventional medicine (e.g. bone implants, stents) – the work done by the Institute may have a significant impact on the design and selection of materials for the production of bone implants. The Institute has also developed a technology for the heat treatment of coronary stents and fatigue tests of elastically deformable vascular stents. The latest achievements of the Institute also include the production of 3DIMP graphene on a semi-industrial scale and studies on the production technology for the production and use of coatings strengthened with nanodiamonds using explosive implantation.
The primary activities of the IMP (research, implementation and services) are carried out by seven research departments, a certification facility and three accredited laboratories (accreditation by the Polish Centre for Accreditation – PCA).
The Institute has accreditations and cooperation agreement, service agreements and agreements for the implementation of new technologies with dozens of companies in Poland, including, in particular: WSK Rzeszów, PWK, Airbus, Aérospatiale, Agusta-Westland, PZL Mielec, PZL Świdnik and Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze.
Each year, the Heat Treatment Centre (COC) implements or provides services relating to heat treatment, thermo-chemical treatment, soldering, sintering, etc., for over 250 small and medium enterprises in Poland.
